The Downsides of Men’s Thongs

I spent a great deal of time promoting all the benefits of the thong, but there are downsides that everyone should be aware of. No piece of engineering is perfect for every scenario; you must understand the limitations of the men’s thong.

If you are considering making the switch, or if you are a daily wearer looking to optimize your rotation, here are the downsides and challenges of the men’s thong.

The Adaptation Curve

The most immediate downside is the initial break-in period. Unlike boxers, which sit loosely, or briefs, which wrap the hip, a thong introduces a new and unfamiliar sensation between the cheeks. For the first few wears, your brain will be hyper-aware of this.

While this sensation eventually fades as you get used to it, the initial distraction can be off-putting if you’re trying the thong for the first time.

Zero Thermal Buffer

While the thong is the king of breathability in the summer, it offers no protection against the cold. In winter, your thighs are left entirely exposed to the outer fabric of your trousers.

Traditional boxers provide an extra layer of insulation for the large muscle groups in your legs. If you are wearing thin trousers on a freezing morning, you will feel the cold more than you would in trunks.

The “Specific Fit” Requirement

You can get away with a poorly fitted pair of boxers. You cannot get away with a poorly fitted thong.

I’ve had thongs that are even slightly too small, and the tension of the backstrap becomes aggressive. It’s lead to discomfort at the back, excessive pressure in the pouch, and my manhood getting squashed throughout the day.

Conversely, when they’ve been too large, the back strap has sagged, and I’ve felt the pouch become unsupportive and the strap move about.

Finding your “Goldilocks” size requires more trial and error than traditional underwear.

Single-Wear Strictness

Because a thong sits in closer proximity to your butthole, there is zero margin for error in hygiene. In a pinch, you cannot really “stretch” a pair of thongs into a second day of wear (not that you should with any underwear). They require regular washing and a strict one-wear rotation.

With traditional boxers, they bridge between the cheeks rather than resting on the anus, offering a false sense of cleanliness that a thong does not, making you think it could be ok to do the emergency second-wear.

Daily Hygiene

For the same reason, wearing a thong requires more attention to staying clean. If you’re not wiping properly after a number two or cleaning enough between the cheeks when showering, with traditional underwear, you might not notice, or feel like you’re getting away with it.

But a thong will let you know. It actively rests within the bum crack, rather than floating over it. Dirty fabric, itching, and odour are all signs you need to up your hygiene, feedback you might not have received from boxer briefs.

The Social Stigma

We live in a world of changing rooms, doctors’ offices, and tailors. While your thong is undetectable under clothes, the moment you disrobe, you are making a visible choice that deviates from the norm.

I find the mental energy required to “not care” about social stigma is the biggest downside. It is one of the reasons I actively try to push the thong to be a more accepted choice.

Is the Trade-Off Worth It?

As you might have noticed, most of these downsides actually affect traditional underwear too, or are easy to get around with some trial and error. If you’re in extreme cold, you’ll probably need some thermals anyway, even if you’re a boxers guy. If you’re wearing your underwear for multiple days or not cleaning yourself properly, that’s an issue, no matter what you’re wearing.

Finding the perfect fit, committing time to adapt, and feeling pressure from society about your choice of underwear is a bit harder to work through. But that effort is worth it. Remember, boxers bunch, absorb, and migrate. Thongs support, stay secure, and become unnoticeable. I believe the downsides are minor hurdles compared to the significant benefits of stability and freedom.
