When it comes to supportive men’s underwear, two styles often get grouped together due to their minimal coverage: the thong and the jockstrap. While they may look similar from the front, the back tells a different story. They were engineered for entirely different purposes.
Choosing between them depends on whether you are looking purely for athletic support and protection, or streamlined support and comfort for your daily wardrobe.
The jockstrap was invented in the late 19th century specifically for bicycle jockeys (hence the name). It keeps the anatomy firmly in place during high-impact movement, securing the pouch with two straps that run underneath the cheeks. Many jockstraps feature a pocket for a protective cup. By removing the fabric from the glutes, it maximizes airflow and prevents overheating during intense workouts.
The jockstrap is, by design, very much just a piece of equipment for athletic protection and support. They are not designed to feel comfortable enough to wear all day, they’re made to do a job.
The thong is a piece of everyday apparel. It shares some of the design features, like reduced coverage and a supportive pouch, but is made to be comfortable, un-noticable, and can be a daily choice.
Modern thongs are designed with soft, high-performance fabrics that are gentler on the skin than the heavy elastics required for a jockstrap. They feature a single strap at the back that sits between the cheeks, where it’s not stretched and pulled during movement. It is thin and stationary enough that many men forget they’re even wearing one, while benefiting from the improved support.
While a jockstrap is excellent for some field sports, the elastic leg straps can sometimes pinch or become uncomfortable after a while. The relief of changing out of one at the end of a game tells you this isn’t a garment for long term wear. The thong, by contrast, is designed to work with the body.
Once you find the correct size, it becomes virtually unnoticeable, making it a highly practical choice for those who value both support and a barely-there feel.
