About This Thong
If you live in the UK, there’s no denying that ASOS is now the go-to place to buy your clothes. They’ve bought over many of the highstreet brands as well as producing clothing under their own label.
I’ve noticed that occasionally as part of their fast-fashion rotation, they’ll design men’s thongs that look functional, rather than another novelty product. Unfortunately these always seem to be limited runs so it’s hard to buy them in time, and even harder to track down once they’ve sold out.
I saw this pair in the sale, and knew I had to jump on them while I could.
First Impressions
The ribbed material felt extremely soft while still maintaining a reasonable level of structure. They’re a classic tanga style design with the elastic waistband which works for my active life, but not my preference.
I generally wouldn’t buy the beige colour, I was worried it would stand out a bit if it slipped above my waistband, but was surprised at how muted the colour was. It almost matches my skin and disappears.
Comfort and Fit
The Pouch
While the rest of the thong works pretty well, the pouch is a bit of a let-down. Unlike most of the thong pouches that I’ve had issues with, this one has too much space! When I first put it on it feels extremely comfortable, with everything sitting where it should. But as I move, things have too much space and start to shift.
The Backstrap
The super-soft ribbed cotton backstrap feels really gentle and nice between the cheeks, so comfortable for a lazy day in the house. But I find it a bit too long, meaning the whole garment ends up sitting much higher than most thongs.
The material also doesn’t have that strong a stretch, so even with the strap sat high, I find it feels loose when I’m walking. A backstrap shifting about can get quite annoying.
The Waistband
The elastic they’ve used for this waistband is really nice. Its soft and stretchy, but is sized perfectly so holds everything else in place while not cutting in.
Everyday Performance
As I’ve mentioned when I first put this on, apart from it sitting higher than my usual thongs, this feels incredibly comfortable. But if I have to do any sort of moving or exercise it just doesn’t hold up.
I wore these for a full day of work, with a lot of sitting and standing, followed with a long evening walk. It handles sitting really well, but as soon as I moved, so did the thong.
It lacks tension in the backstrap, so it feels like it’s constantly moving about between my cheeks. The sides of the pouch feel locked against my body so nothing feels at risk of falling out, but the pouch itself offers little active support to my manhood. Basically it’s a comfortable thong if you’re planning on not moving too much.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- The soft fabric: The feeling of the cotton rib against the skin is really lovely
- A perfect waistband: No digging in or moving around
- Lazy-day comfort: holds things in place without and pinching or compression so you can chill.
Cons
- The pouch volume: There is just too much space to properly hold and support
- A lack of tension: The elasticity of the fabric isn’t strong enough to keep the backstrap locked in place
- Backstrap too long: Means the whole thong sits higher and allows it to shift more.
What I’d Change
I would keep the waistband and the soft ribbing, but change the amount of fabric elasticity so the backstrap can stay locked in. With the firmer elastic, I’d reduce the pouch volume to allow it to hold and support, rather than letting things get jumbled up while contained.
Final Verdict
This thong was probably designed as part of ASOS’s fast-fashion turnaround and not as a serious daily option, but they managed to make a well-functioning product. It does need some refining to make it work perfectly but I do hope they continue to offer thongs designed by their own label in the future.
Frustratingly, this design and many of their others have been discontinued, so it’s hard to recommend.
