When people hear “men’s thong underwear,” they tend to make assumptions immediately. I know that because I used to have them too.
But my experience with thongs has been far more ordinary, comfortable, and practical than most people would expect.
It Started With Curiosity, Not Identity
I didn’t start wearing thongs as a statement. I started because I was curious.
I wanted to understand what it would actually feel like to wear something that looked like a constant “wedgie” effect. Plenty of my female friends wore them and said they were comfortable, why not try it myself.
When I first bought a pair from a high street shop, it wasn’t perfect. The pouch wasn’t well designed, and I was very aware of the back strap. Not in a painful way, but in a “this is new and unusual” way.
I also felt very self-conscious. I genuinely believed people would somehow know. That fear meant I barely left my flat while wearing them at first.
But even then, I didn’t hate them. It was a new sensation, I was just adjusting, and could tell they had the potential to be comfortable.
A big turning point for me was wearing a pair out to a Halloween party. I wasn’t wearing them as part of a costume—I just used the situation as a mental safety net in case anyone noticed.
Of course, nobody did.
Things changed when I bought a few multipacks and started wearing them more regularly. That was the beginning of something important: I started realizing that they weren’t visible, and more importantly, they weren’t anyone else’s business.
From there, they slowly became part of normal life. Work days, errands, gym sessions, it all just became routine.
The biggest shift for me wasn’t emotional. It was physical. I started noticing how much I had been tolerating traditional underwear, the fabric bunching under clothing, the lack of proper support, the constant small adjustments throughout the day.
With thongs, those problems reduced significantly. What replaced them was something much simpler: stability.
A good pair stays in place. It doesn’t shift. It doesn’t bunch. And when the pouch is designed properly, it supports without compressing.
I didn’t expect improved confidence to be a side effect of this at all, but something interesting happened when I realised nobody could tell what I was wearing. That removed a layer of mental noise I didn’t even realise I was carrying. I stopped worrying about it.
And over time, I noticed I held myself differently, more upright, more composed. The gentle presence of the strap almost became a reminder of posture and confidence rather than something I was conscious of in a negative way.
It wasn’t dramatic. It was subtle. But it was real.
Today, I wear thongs daily. Not because I’m making a statement, but because I have found they work for me.
They are great for all-day comfort during my standard workday, offer support and stability during a gym session, and pack down tiny when I travel.
One of my early worries was what wearing them might “say” about me. I worried it might suggest something about my sexuality or identity. But I know who I am, I’m a straight man, and I also know that underwear doesn’t define that.
Because in reality, nobody can see what I’m wearing, and more importantly, I’ve realised I don’t need to justify comfort choices to stereotypes.
I’ve told a few people close to me—my wife, my parents, an old flatmate, and an ex—but I generally keep it private, not out of shame, but because I don’t want unnecessary misunderstanding or awkwardness.
These days, what started as curiosity has become routine. What once felt unusual now feels normal. And what used to be something I was aware of all the time is now just… underwear.
Comfortable, well-designed underwear, at that.
Men’s thongs work for my everyday comfort, and I wish more men were willing to give them a try, not because they’re for everyone, but because I think a lot more men would be surprised if they got past the assumptions and just tried a properly designed pair.
