  • What Is a Wedgie?

And Why a Thong Doesn’t Feel Like One

If you’ve never worn a men’s thong before, there’s a good chance you’ve had the same thought I once did:

“Surely wearing a thong must feel like having a wedgie all day.”

After all, both involve fabric sitting between your asscrack don’t they?

But as it turns out, they’re actually very different experiences, so today we’re looking at what a wedgie is, and why a thong isn’t one (and can help you have less of them)

    What Is a Wedgie?

A wedgie happens when underwear ends up somewhere it wasn’t designed to be. This can happen in two ways. Either they’re pulled up there or they have worked their way up there themselves.

    Pulled up there

This is when you’ve accidentally pulled your underwear up too high. Or someone else has pulled them up to cause discomfort.

    Worked up there

When your bum muscles have moved and flexed throughout the day, and your underwear fabric can’t keep up, so it gets pulled into an area where it doesn’t need to work against your body, up your crack.

Both ends up with a large amount of fabric bunched between the buttocks.

That’s why wedgies feel so uncomfortable. The underwear is out of position and under unusual tension. Something isn’t right, and your first instinct is to pull the fabric back into place.

A Thong Starts in the Right Position

A thong isn’t going to stop that first kind of wedgie; someone pulling our underwear up further than they’re supposed to go will be uncomfortable no matter what you choose to wear.

But for the wedgies that just happen throughout the day, a thong works differently. The narrow back strap is designed to sit between the buttocks from the moment you put it on.

    Nothing has ridden up.

Nothing is being forced somewhere it shouldn’t be.

It’s simply sitting where it was intended to sit.

Thongs Have Less Material Up There

Another reason a wedgie feels uncomfortable is the amount of fabric involved.

A boxer brief leg or the back of a pair of briefs is relatively wide.

When that much fabric bunches together, it creates folds, wrinkles and pressure. A large mass of fabric insistent on working its way into you

A thong back is very narrow by comparison.

Instead of several centimetres of fabric trying to squeeze into the same space, there’s just a slim strap designed for exactly that purpose.

There’s much less material to create pressure or bunching.

    Stability Is the Key

A wedgie is constantly moving. As you walk a few steps it shifts. You sit down and it changes position again. It rarely stays comfortable because it isn’t stable, you have to dig it out and adjust everything.

A well-fitting thong is surprisingly different.

Once it’s settled into place, it tends to stay there.

Because it isn’t constantly moving, your brain quickly stops paying attention to it. You end up experiencing less wedgies in your day to day life.

Why Your Brain Expects the Worst

Before trying a thong, your only point of reference is the other times fabric has found its way between your cheeks, usually a wedgie.

So your brain naturally assumes that if the fabric between the cheeks from traditional underwear feels uncomfortable, a thong must feel even worse.

But that’s like assuming a properly fitted shoe must feel like a shoe that’s slipped halfway off your foot.

The sensation is different because the design is different.

    One is working as intended.

    The other isn’t.

    My Own Experience

Before I bought my first thong, I was convinced the back strap would feel at least a bit like a wedgie. I’d asked women I knew about why they wore them and understood the less-fabric-up there argument, but it was the one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Instead, it turned out to be one of the least interesting parts of wearing a thong. After a few minutes, I found it surprisingly unobtrusive. After a couple of hours I’d forgotten I was even wearing a thong.

That wasn’t what I’d expected at all.

Does It Take Time to Adjust?

    For most people, yes.

Anything unfamiliar feels more noticeable at first.

The first few minutes wearing a thong are often spent paying attention to the new sensation simply because it’s different.

As long as the thong fits well, that awareness usually fades as your brain realises there’s nothing uncomfortable happening.

It’s not that the strap disappears, It’s that it stops feeling important.

    Thongs Aren’t Wedgies

Unless someone pulls them up intentionally, thongs reduce wedgies.

The idea that a thong feels like a permanent wedgie is just a misconception surrounding this style of underwear.

A wedgie is uncomfortable because underwear has moved somewhere it wasn’t meant to be.

A thong is comfortable when it’s designed to be there from the start.

It’s one of those things that’s difficult to understand until you try it.

  • How to Avoid a Whale Tail

If you’ve accidentally spotted someone’s thong in public, it’s probably due to the waistband of their underwear ending up resting above their trousers. We all remember the mid-2000s, when women would show off their skimpy underwear this way intentionally.

    It’s called a whaletale.

And if you’re a guy wanting to wear men’s thongs without drawing attention to the fact, you’re going to need to learn how to avoid letting them show.

Are Thongs Bad For Your Health?

While the men’s thong has become a staple for some due to its minimal fabric, superior comfort, and “invisible” look under tight clothing, it frequently sparks a debate: Is it actually safe?

Its unique design does conjure up questions about how it might impact your health if you choose to wear one, and with a lot of false information about, it’s not hard to see why.

But here’s the interesting thing. From a medical perspective, a thong is not inherently dangerous, and for many reasons, the choice to wear a man’s thong could actually be the healthy choice. Here is a look at the health concerns people have, and why they’re false.

How the Borat Thong Helped Turn Men’s Thongs Into a Joke

For a lot of people, one image immediately appears when they hear the words “men’s thong.” Not practical athletic support or comfortable designs.

Just Borat in a fluorescent green mankini.

And honestly, that single cultural image has probably done more to shape public opinion about men’s thongs than almost anything else.

    The Thong vs. The Jockstrap

When it comes to supportive men’s underwear, two styles often get grouped together due to their minimal coverage: the thong and the jockstrap. While they may look similar from the front, the back tells a different story. They were engineered for entirely different purposes.

Choosing between them depends on whether you are looking purely for athletic support and protection, or streamlined support and comfort for your daily wardrobe.

The anatomy of the Men’s Thong

To understand why the men’s thong has moved from being a novelty item to a performance tool, it’s useful to understand its parts and understand how they work together. Unlike a standard pair of boxers, which is essentially just a fabric bag with holes, the men’s thong is an engineered garment designed to work with the male body, balancing support, aesthetics, and total freedom of movement.

Here is a breakdown of the three key components that make up the anatomy of a modern men’s thong.

  • Calvin Klein Icon Cotton Stretch Men’s Thong Review

Calvin Klein Icon Cotton Stretch Men’s Thong Review

An everyday thong option from the biggest name in men’s underwear. Well designed and subtle, they support with daily life without drawing attention.

    Quick Summary

    Brand: Calvin Klein
    Price: £25 for a 3-pack
    Thong Width: 3cm
    Size I wear: M
    Overall Rating: ★★★★☆ (8/10)
    Best For: Everyday / Beginners

    About This Thong

If you were asked to list men’s underwear brands, Calvin Klein would probably at the top. They are the classic men’s underwear designers. So to see that they have a thong line, and that its not marketed as a novelty, is really great to see.

Online, people seem to be split on liking this one or not, so I knew I would have to make up my own mind by testing them out.

    First Impressions

When I first took them out of the packaging, they looked like fairly standard thongs—which is exactly what I want for daily wear. The material felt like a really good quality cotton, and the stitching all looked great.

The waistband stood out as being very soft, exactly like the classic style I’ve come to expect from other Calvin Klein underwear.

Nothing wildly stood out, but they looked completely normal and reliable, which is perfect for everyday use.

    Comfort & Fit

    The Pouch

The pouch is honestly perfect. Calvin Klein did a really good job at designing it to give me great support without any discomfort, and it worked really well for my anatomy.

    The Back Strap

The 3cm back strap is really well designed. It hits the perfect balance of tension to make me feel secure all day, while being subtle enough that I’m not constantly noticed or distracted by it.

    The Waistband

The waistband is perfect. It is soft all the way around and didn’t dig into my sides at all, but still anchors the pouch and strap in place without riding up.

    Everyday Performance

I found that these perform really well for all of my normal daily activities and tasks. I easily forgot I was wearing them most of the time.

My only slight criticism is that the cotton material isn’t the best for moisture-wicking. If I’m active and start getting sweaty, they definitely hold on to that dampness.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • Perfect, highly supportive pouch
    • Really good value (men’s thong multi-packs are rare!)
    • Soft, comfortable waistband all day long
    • Well-tensioned back strap that keeps things secure

    Cons

    • Cotton fabric doesn’t wick away moisture very well
    • Slow to dry if you have an active, sweaty day

    What I Would Change?

If they kept this exact same cut and tension but made them from a more technical fabric, they would be absolutely perfect for me.

    Final Verdict

I would absolutely recommend these, as I think they make a wonderful beginner’s thong and are perfect for daily wear. Because they are such a great fit for a daily routine, I would definitely buy another pair.

  • HOM Freddy Men’s Thong Review

    HOM Freddy Men’s Thong Review

A popular thong that feels like it locks into place, but requires careful positioning when putting on.

    Quick Summary

    Brand: HOM (Freddy)
    Price: ~£15
    Thong Width: 0.5cm
    Size I Wear: L
    Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆ (6.5/10)
    Best For: Everyday

    About This Thong

HOM has been making the Freddy string for decades, and has a huge fan-base of loyal wearers. This thong clearly works well for some men, so I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype for me.

I have actually owned these previously in a medium and couldn’t get them to fit me right at all. After a bit of research and reading other reviews, I decided to try sizing up.

    First Impressions

When I first took them out of the packaging, they looked surprisingly small, especially since they lack the traditional thick elastic waistband.

The fabric itself felt like a soft cotton, and the construction quality immediately stood out. The stitching along the edges of the backstrap is incredibly precise. I also noticed how nicely the rear triangle tapers down into a very minimal 0.5cm cord strap.

    Comfort & Fit

This is a style that requires some attention to wear; I can’t just pull them on like most of my other thongs.

    The Pouch

It looks small and sits lower than most designs. However, once I have it properly placed, it fits everything well without any pinching or crushing.

The connection point where the pouch meets the backstrap is incredibly fine, meaning it digs into the taint and is highly uncomfortable if it isn’t positioned right. I have to make sure the pouch is correctly placed before seating the rear strap.

    The Backstrap

At just 0.5cm, it is instantly noticeable when I first put it on, though it surprisingly fades into the background quickly. That said, it doesn’t provide the same gentle tension and feedback I typically associate with thongs, and I honestly prefer a wider backstrap.

    The Waistband

Very comfortable, thanks to the elastic being fully covered by the soft cotton material.

    Everyday Performance

Once I have them properly adjusted, the standout feature of this thong is its incredible stability. They feel exceptionally stable throughout the day with absolutely no shifting or moving, all while keeping everything comfortable.

I love the way the triangle at the top of the rear strap feels like it slots into place.

For workouts, the cotton fabric holds its structural support well even when I get sweaty, but I do wish they were made from a more modern, moisture-wicking material for exercise.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • Exceptionally stable; it feels like it completely locks into place once it’s on.
    • Covered waistband is highly comfortable.
    • Soft cotton fabric and precise, high-quality stitching

    Cons

    • I can’t just pull it on, I have to take the time to position it.
    • Very fine pouch-to-strap connection is highly uncomfortable if misaligned.
    • Cotton lacks moisture-wicking properties for high-activity days.
    • The 0.5cm chord strap lacks the comfortable feedback of a wider backstrap.

    What I would change

I think the cut of the front is great, but it would be amazing to have these with a standard thong back, rather than the string. I’d also prefer the pouch and backstrap to join a little further back, so you don’t have to place it so precisely when putting them on.

    Final Verdict

The HOM Freddy is a bit of a mixed bag for me, but its structural stability keeps it in my rotation. It isn’t a “pull up and go” pair, and getting the sizing right was a make-or-break experience. However, because it stays perfectly in place once it is on, it’s a reliable choice for everyday wear, and despite its downsides, I would probably buy another one.
    Overall: 6.5/10
